The Famished Road
Ben Okri (Nigeria), 1991 (Dansk oversættelse: Tiderne Skifter 1993)

Song of Lawino and Song of Ocol
Okot p'BITEK, East African Publishing House, Nairobi 1972, 255 s. m. 35 s. introducerende tekst/noter.
Fx i et digt kaldet The woman with whom I share my husband skriver Okot: Ocol is no longer in love with the old type: // He is in love with a modern girl. //.....to look like a white woman; // her lips are red-hot // like glowing charcoal, // she resembles the wild cat.

Bøger om Afrika

The Shadow of the Sun: My African Life
Ryszard Kapuscinski & Klara Glowczewska, Penguin, 2002

In 1957, Ryszard Kapuscinski arrived in Africa to witness the beginning of the end of colonial rule as the first African correspondent of Poland's state newspaper. From the early days of independence in Ghana to the ongoing ethnic genocide in Rwanda, Kapuscinski has crisscrossed vast distances pursuing the swift, and often violent, events that followed liberation. Kapuscinski hitchhikes with caravans, wanders the Sahara with nomads, and lives in the poverty-stricken slums of Nigeria. He wrestles a king cobra to the death and suffers through a bout of malaria. What emerges is an extraordinary depiction of Africa--not as a group of nations or geographic locations--but as a vibrant and frequently joyous montage of peoples, cultures, and encounters. It's Our Turn to Eat: The Story of a Kenyan Whistle-Blower
Michela Wrong, Fourth Estate, 2010

In January 2003, Kenya was hailed as a model of democracy after the peaceful election of its new president, Mwai Kibaki. By appointing respected longtime reformer John Githongo as anticorruption czar, the new Kikuyu government signaled its determination to end the corrupt practices that had tainted the previous regime. Yet only two years later, Githongo himself was on the run, having secretly compiled evidence of official malfeasance throughout the new administration. Unable to remain silent, Githongo, at great personal risk, made the painful choice to go public. The result was a Kenyan Watergate. (Amazon.com)
Michela Wrong is a British journalist and author who spent six years as a foreign correspondent covering events across the African continent for Reuters, the BBC, and the Financial Times (http://en.wikipedia.org/ 21/12/2012)

King Leopold's Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror, and Heroism in Colonial Africa
Adam Hochschild, Macmillan, 1999

"To an already long list of tyrants which includes Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot and Idi Amin, a late addition is required.'Late' only because King Leopold II of Belgium (1835-1909) should always have been there. As 'owner' of the Congo Free State from 1885 to 1908 he was responsible for what Joseph Conrad once called 'the vilest scramble for loot that ever disfigured the history of human conscience.' It is indeed a ghastly story of greed, lies and murder. And Adam Hochschild retells it well. 'King Leopold's Ghost' last week beat several excellent books to win the Lionel Gelber prize. . . . now the world's most important award for non-fiction. . . . Around the turn of this century in the depths of the Congo the bonds of humanity were unbound and the trappings of civilisation cast aside, releasing something diabolical which exists within us all. Mr. Hochschild conveys this particularly well." -- The Economist, Sept. 11, 1999

The Scramble for Africa 1876-1912

Africa; Dispatches from a Fragile Continent
